Senior Companions
In our Senior Companion Program, caring volunteers, people age 60 and older, provide assistance and friendship to other older individuals who are less able to care for themselves. The volunteer receives a small, non-taxable stipend for his or her work as well as reimbursement for travel, and the homebound client receives assistance with many of the chores of daily living. The activities that the volunteer participates in with the senior can vary according to the senior’s needs.
Senior companions have been known to take their clients fishing, to the store, help with light housekeeping, and a variety of other tasks. Both volunteer and client reap the rewards of decreased loneliness and increased self-esteem. This program also is free of charge to the senior. The need for companions, however, is usually very high and may result in waiting lists in some cases.
