Special Services

From time to time the Area Agency on Aging also participates in special initiatives or programs. Most often these are limited by availability of funds, time of year, or other restrictions. Due to the nature of these special projects, it is best to contact a case manager about availability at any given time. Examples of these special services are:

1.) Alternatives for Adults with Physical Disabilities

This program is a special program of the Department of Human Services, which provides case management services as well as some in-home services and other assistance to disabled individuals aged 21 to 64. Referrals for these services cannot be made directly to the Area Agency, but our case managers can assist persons who may qualify to contact the appropriate persons to apply. 2.) Helpful Hammers

The Helpful Hammers program provides assistance to seniors who need wheelchair ramps or other minor home modifications that they would otherwise be unable to afford. The agency has limited funds through private donations, small grants, and assistance from local businesses, which is used to purchase the necessary materials for the modifications. Labor may be provided by the senior’s family, the hiring of a craftsman, or sometimes through volunteers at churches or other organizations. Due to limited funds, the number of projects each year is very limited. Call your nearest Area Agency on Aging office regarding availability if you have needs in this area. 3.) Emergency Prescription Drug Assistance

The Area Agency may receive special funds from time to time from the Attorney General’s Office as a result of the settlement of litigation. At times funds are received that can be used to assist seniors with refilling seriously needed prescriptions that they can’t otherwise afford. Narcotics and/or mood altering drugs are not included. These funds are very limited and often are used up quickly. So, please call a case manager and check availability if you have a serious need. 4.) Fans and Air Conditioners

Many homebound and disabled seniors can experience serious medical complications due to summer heat. While it is not a guaranteed source of funding, each year the Area Agency on Aging usually is able to provide a limited number of fans and/or air conditioners to seniors who are at high risk from summer heat. Due to the limitations of this program, we attempt to serve those in most serious need first. Please contact a case manager near you for details. 5.) Other Grants

The Area Agency on Aging of West Central Arkansas is always looking for funding sources to help increase and enhance services to the seniors in our area. In the past, we have worked with the Susan G. Komen Foundation to perform breast cancer screenings at our senior centers, the Daughters of Charity Foundation to improve methods to identify and serve seniors in rural areas, and other funding sources to address specific needs.
